The Unknown Powder Tour

Tokyo - Niseko - somewhere on Hokkaido Island - Sapporo
13 days

This is a tour with no set itinerary. You simply follow the snow to the best of the best over seven days. All you know is that you begin in Niseko (western Hokkaido) and end in Sapporo City (central Hokkaido) and in between you will be riding the deepest snow on the island. What more do you need to know?

Now..the local partner we are with in this instance ski hard. They are the most reputable and longest-standing touring company in Niseko and they are single-minded in approach - they will put as much as is humanly possible in to seven days on the mountains. As they say themselves; " this is the type of holiday that you go back to work to recover from".

We've added on a few days in Tokyo to begin with - time to explore and get your body in sync with the local time - and then you join the small group in Niseko for three nights, before heading off to....well, who knows! We know you'll be back in Sapporo City several days later, so a hotel is booked and your flights home to the UK. Other than that, you're in their very experienced and capable hands.

Each day you will be equipped with a full set of backcountry touring equipment, two guides, and use road-shuttles from resorts to off piste terrain not found on ski maps, and then skin to backcountry stashes. But with these guys a simple drive is never quite just that; along the way they are likely to pull off the road at local hills to build kickers or hit enticing roadside pillows. And after you come off the mountain each day they'll take you to the best local's restaurants, enjoy the onsens (hot springs), and of course head out on the town to experience Japanese some quirky Japanese nightlife.

Pack light, drink plenty fo energy drinks and brace yourself for early mornings and late nights.

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Depart from the UK, flying direct to Tokyo on British Airways.
Day 2
Arrive in Tokyo Haneda Airport and make your way to your hotel in the Shinjuku district. Spend the afternoon and evening relaxing...or exploring.
Day 3
A full day at leisure in Tokyo - a day to explore and also to get in to sync with Japanese time. Different Snow have produced comprehensive, pragmatic and sometimes irreverent 'How To...' guides to help you explore - full of practical advice, recommendations, sightseeing notes and tips.
Day 4
Make your way back out to Haneda Airport and fly north to Sapporo Chitose Airport on Hokkaido Island. Ski shuttle coach to Niseko. Meet your group at the lodge, close to Niseko Village and discuss the upcoming adventure.
Days 5 - 7
Three full days guided skiing in the Niseko area. There are many options and favourites include Rusutsu, Moiwa, and Shiribetsu. But where you go each day is kept flexible - weather, snow pack, how busy the resorts are, the energy levels of the group all come in to play.
Day 8
A day's skiing in the Sapporo region is pencilled in for today - but who knows?
Day 9 - 11
Three away days. All we know is that you've left Niseko behind, and you've headed to wherever the best condition currently are. With such freedom comes assurances - wherever you are, these will be the best three days skiing of your life, more than likely. Your guides know Hokkaido better than anyone, they have been operating here for many, many years and they are sit at the heart of the local ski community. Trust there experience and know-how to get you to th e best snow on Hokkaido Island.
Day 12
You have a free day, after the tour ends, in Sapporo City. The group has dispersed, so you get to enjoy this cosmopolitan, slightly hipster city by yourselves (or by yourself).
Day 13
An early start - you fly from Sapporo Chitose Airport to Tokyo Haneda and then head directly home to the UK on British Airways.

5:1 Client to Guide ratio (i.e. two guides will accompany the group, if full).

Skill Level: advanced / expert in powder

You must have a good level of fitness and you must be able to ski the whole mountain with confidence and at a reasonable speed in powder, through trees and in variable conditions.

This is an important consideration as no one wants to be in over their head, holding up a group or conversely spend their day standing around waiting for others to make it down the mountain.

What our customers say

5 star rating

Our customers rate us 'Excellent'

We had a trip of a lifetime holiday

Different Snow presented us with an excellent itinerary to suit our budget and accommodated specific requests. We had a whistlestop tour of Tokyo followed by great powder skiing in Hakuba then a cultural exploration of Kyoto. A fascinating and rewarding trip!

Every detail was taken care of

We love to travel and I love planning trips, but Japan was just a little bit out of my comfort zone. I appreciated Nick’s expertise and was willing to pay for it! It was worth every penny in my mind. We appreciated the “guides” and all the suggestions.
